In Serenity in Flight, Samkelo Matomela positions a young figure within a suspended, dreamlike landscape populated by vividly coloured folded butterflies and a snake winding along the tree beside him. The apparent calm of the scene is complicated by this nearby presence. In Matomela’s stated visual language, the snake represents danger and corruption, while his figurative practice places knowledge and self-possession at the centre of resistance.
